  1. Retro styles from Sears

    Monday, April 30, 2012

I never thought I would be waxing poetic about Sears, but I can not believe their fabulous vintage-inspired styles - at very reasonable prices - on their website. I will be dropping by my local store tomorrow to browse, me thinks.

*note: this is not a sponsored post! I was just surprised to see so many things I liked at Sears.*

    Foundation Garments
I have learnt, from the ever wise RuebyRetro, Krista Dee and Miss Bee, that Sears is a great place to find old-school underwear, bras and girdles.

    Warner's® Medium Control Brief, $10
Vanity Fair® Value Medium Control 2-Pack Full Cut Leg Brief, $15

    Playtex® 18 Hour® Wire-free Soft-cup Full-support Comfort Strap® Bra, $18.98
    Vanity Fair®/MD 3/4-length Long-line Posture Bra - $30
    Swimsuits
You may remember my previous swimsuit post. I can't believe I overlooked Sears when I was making it!
I will be buying this Esther Williams look-a-like ASAP.

    St. Tropez 1-piece Swimsuit, $30
Mind you, these are pretty adorable too...

    Jantzen® 1-pc. Bandeau Suit - $66
Well, these ones are a little pricy for me, but still super cute!

    Jantzen® 1-pc. Bandeau Skirted Suit - $111.99
    Jantzen® 1-pc. Skirted Suit - $93.99
    Shoes
This is really the only pair of Sears shoes that I liked. I am mad for loafers lately!

  2. Show 'n' Tell: pre-new job shopping

    Friday, March 2, 2012

I must confess that I spent a wee bit of money today at my favourite store Imagine Vintage, but I just had to! I'm leaving soon and I won't be able to pop in whenever I feel like it. :( That said, I am sure Bee and I will road trip to Camrose once in a while to go shopping a visit Peggy.

I love this floral raw silk housedress. I'm not a huge fan of buttons running all the way done, but in this it works!

I also fell in love with this 60s dress - it so springy! It fit like a dream too, which is always comforting in a back-zip dress.

I also got this embroidered skirt. I'm not sure what year it is (there is a care label inside though) but it was made in India. I love embroidered skirts for summer.

I also bought these darling red gloves to wear once it warms up outside - they're a little thin to be wearing quite yet. Bee gave me a white trench coat so I think bright red gloves will go great.

I also got two 50s necklaces. Surprise, they're teal!

Peggy also gave me these two Better Home and Gardens from 1957 and 1946 as a going-away present. She is too sweet! They are in such great condition and I can't wait to scan and share them with you.

Issue from 1957 on the left, 1946 on the right.

From 1957. Do I even need to say how badly I want a washer that colour?

From 1947  - I love the little vanity.

Then after visiting Imagine I stopped by Twig. Nothing really caught my eye except for the slips (I sear, it's the only place in Camrose I've been able to find them) and this necklace, which doubles as a watch and a magnifying glass. The only thing is that once I got home I found that I couldn't change the time on it :/ so I am going to find out if I'm even supposed to be able to or not. It ticks, so I don't see why it would be designed not to.

A few days ago I happened to be in the mall and I swung by Ardenes to pick up some new sunglasses. I love getting sunglasses there because they are cheap yet sturdy knock-offs (I am really good at breaking and losing sunglasses, so I never buy the real things). I remember lusting after the Prada Irregular Frame sunglasses after seeing a gorgeous back-page ad in a magazine. Of course, the Prada ones are probably a bajillion dollars, where these were 2 for $15.

    Prada ones

I also got these tortoise shell sunglasses, which are pretty similar to the Michael Kor sunnies Vicki shows off here.

Oh, I almost forgot - I bought a snood from Arthelia's Attic on Etsy and I love it!

So long story short, i'm off to see if there is any money left in the bank.

  3. Show 'n' Tell: 1934 Christmas Catalogue

    Friday, February 10, 2012

I'm sure you can't tell a difference, but this is my first post from my new-to-me MacBook Pro! I used to have a MacBook before I started blogging, but she died in a tragic drinking and computing incident (lesson learned). I had been using G's Dell laptop, but to be honest it sucked and I much prefer the Mac interface. Thanks to a tax reassessment, I had the money to buy a new one. This is a refurbished 15 in MacBook pro, and it was about $850 cheaper than if I had bought it new. Sweet, eh?

Sorry to be quiet on the blogging front, we had a major breaking news story happen in our area that took my attention. Two RCMP officers (our top cops) were shot on a farm in my coverage area, so I had to run out and cover it - in heels and a skirt, naturally. You can find more information on CamroseCanadian.com if you're so inclined. Luckily yesterday was my day off, so I had a chance to relax (and I also did something very exciting that I can hopefully share with you soon!) and catch up on my sleep.

BUT! I did not just log in to brag about my awesome yet tiring week. I actually have something vintage-related to show you too. My mom forwarded me an email from a colleague of hers who heard that I was into vintage. Imagine my delight when I saw that it was a bunch of scans from a 1934 Christmas catalog. I don't know the source - if she had scanned them or found them on the Internet - but I still wanted to share them.

    I love the hair!

I love the sporty ensembles at the top!

Aren't those fabulous? And such great quality too.

I have lots of posts I want to write, so here's hoping I have time soon! While I work this weekend I have a clean slate on Sunday (so far) and all I want to do is bake red velvet cupcakes for Valentine's Day and write a bunch of blog posts!

    XO Laurie

  4. Happy weekend all! I hope you are having a great lazy day doing whatever you want to be doing. I'll be spending the day knitting and watching the BBC TV series Land Girls (1 and 2), which I took out from the library. I've had a fairly busy weekend off, so I'm looking forward to laying on the couch doing nothing for a while!

Friday G and I went to Edmonton to celebrate our three-year anniversary. We went to the Telus World of Science Titanic exhibit, something we've been meaning to do for a while now but never got around to. You weren't allowed to take photos, but some are featured on the website. It was a great exhibit (we didn't do the accompanying Imax movie because it wasn't showing for another 90 minutes) but it was rather short. It's amazing how well these artifacts are preserved!

You also get a little card at the beginning that represented a passenger on the Titanic and then you look on the wall to see if you survived. G knew he was a goner right away because he was part of the band. I was a second-class passenger who was coming home to Canada after buying my wedding dress in England (I wish!) and it turns out I survived. No info on the dress, though.

After that, we went to dinner at the Keg because we had gift certificates burning a hole in our pocket. Neither of us had eaten there before but OH MY GOD was it good. Why did I wait 21 years to have fillet mignon?

Saturday we went to #yegmediacamp, which was a short day conference that brought web developers and journalists together. It was great and I learned a lot, but if you follow me on Twitter you probably heard me blather on about it enough already.

After that G went to visit a friend, so I met up with Miss Bee and we went to Sally Beauty. Again, WHY did I wait 21 years to go there? Granted I never cared about hair stuff much before I got into vintage, but my goodness it is amazing. I was not surprised when mt bill came to $95.

I went there with a dual purpose - to find a bun form so I can use it as a rat and to find some things for the Fedora Lounge Beauty Box, which is a box that travelles from lounger to lounger around the world. You take stuff out, put stuff in. I've never participated so I'm excited!

I'm not going to show what I bought for the box because there's no fun in that, but I did buy a few duplicates for myself. I still have a few of my favourite products I want to buy and put in as well.

My goodies for the beauty box

A hair comb, pony tails holder and a straight hair form

end papers, double prong clips, lottabody & bottle, butterfly clips to do waves

An incredibly soft bristle brush and a teasing brush

After shopping and dinner, we went to a Sugar Foot Stomp! I had lots of fun and I think most people assumed I knew how to swing dance because I was all dressed up. I was wearing my new petticoat, which was tons of fun to dance in! The only thing is that I didn't have appropriate footwear because I didn't know that I was going dancing when I came up to Edmonton, so I was just in my stockings.  I didn't get stepped on, but it was harder to do some of the moves because I didn't have any grip on the floor! (I didn't take any photos because I didn't have my camera on me.)

Then we went to Bee's house to watch Swing Kids (which I had never seen but was really good!) and paint our nails. She also spoiled me with gifts, that girl! She's too sweet :D

ALSO - Bee is having a giveaway once she reaches 100 followers. Have you followed her wonderful blog yet?

She found this 1943 Complete Book of Sewing and Complete Book of Crochet at Goodwill for $4. So I have to learn to crochet and sew now!

She also passed on this white trench coat, which will be a great spring jacket for me.

She also gave me her open bottom girdle. See what I said about her being too sweet? (I know this photo is way overblown, but it helps to see the detail).

Now I really need some rest. Ta-ta for now dolls!

    XO Laurie

  5. Goals: Crafty Lady

    Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Ever since I started dressing vintage, I'm had the urge to become more crafty. I've already started my foray into knitting, I want to get into sewing and this weekend, I did my first attempt at embroidery.

After a monogram tutorial by Vixen Vintage popped up on Pinterest, I decided to give it a go. I took a t-shirt that I wouldn't mind wrecking if the monogram didn't turn out and decided to embroider my blog logo.

It's not perfect (I should have done the blue first, not the orange!) but it turned out all right, I think.

Except now I have a problem - I want to embroider ALL the things. I should have seen this coming.

In other news, I had a good hair day today. I went to bed without curling my hair, so this morning it was a flat gross mess. I REALLY should buy a snood, but until then, I think this was a good lazy day alternative.

For those of you who know the hairband method for hair curling, you may see what I've done. The hairband method has never worked for curling my hair, but I do like it as a style in itself. Instead of wrapping my hair all the way around a headband that was the same colour, I just did the back and did victory rolls in the front.

Whoops, ignore the loose piece in the back!

    voila!
I haven't mastered bobby pinning the hair so it stays in a roll, so I have to be tucking the hair in the back in every once in a while, lest it goes astray, like in the first photo.

    And here's my full outfit:

This sweater is pink, not red. My white balance was off...
Hmmm, I think I could totally embroider something on that sweater...
