  1. Thanks all to your comments on Facebook, Twitter and on the blog regarding yesterday's post on how to do my hair after an early morning flight. I think I have a good idea now of what I'm going to attempt!

I had a stroke of genius (humble, me) as I was making my way to work. I've decided that I will sleep in pin curls, but I'm going to take out the clips before I leave and let them be. Most of the time if I take them out carefully after sleeping on them they maintain their curled up shape. Then, I'll brush them out once I get to my destination.

However, I do have a plan B! Last night I couldn't be bothered to set my hair, so I thought this morning would be a good opportunity to try an up do. My hair is just long enough to do a little roll in the back, like so:

You know what they say about going to San Francisco.
I just did the front of my hair into victory rolls, but I feel like it's missing a certain je nais se quais. Perhaps several smaller rolls? It was suggested on Instagram that I add in more flowers, but I think it might be overkill.

What do you think? After this whole debacle I'll be sure to post what I ended up doing with my locks.

  2. Hair help: Setting curls while flying

    Thursday, October 4, 2012

Hi gang, I'm in need of some guidance and advice this morning.
This weekend I'm flying to San Francisco to head to Santa Rosa, California with my boyfriend Ian* to his friend's wedding. Besides the fact that this is awesome and very exciting, I do need some help.

What on earth am I going to do with my hair? Or, rather, how am I going to do it?

I have to leave my Edmonton apartment at 4 a.m. Saturday to catch the airport shuttle for my 7:30 a.m. flight, which means I arrive in San Fran at 9:44 a.m. (my wonderful mother gave me some aeroplan points, and I was able to fly direct in business class. Faaaancy!). Ian is already en route to California, and will pick me up before heading to Santa Rosa for the 4:30 p.m. ceremony.

My dilemma is this: When/how will I curl my hair? I don't want to set it overnight Friday and style it at 3 a.m. Saturday as it's sure to fall flat by the time it's the ceremony 13 hours later. I am nervous about setting it in the morning before I leave because I don't want to cause a kerfuffle at the airport. Not too many women (especially 22 year olds) wear their hair up in pin curl clips on the plane. Also, I don't really want my head to get wanded. It's a tad embarressing.

So, pin curls are out of the question unless I have enough time after getting through security and homeland security (sigh) to pin curl while I'm waiting for my flight. My other option is sponge rollers - but again, I don't want to get asked to take them out in line at security.

Has anyone else flown (domestic or otherwise) with a set in? What did you do and how did security personnel react? I'm awaiting your tips and advice!

    XO Laurie

*Remember that spiel about how I was going to be all awesome and single for a while? It lasted a month (which y'all didn't know about) and a day. The day after I posted my bachelorette post was when Ian and I went on our first date. Oops.

  3. September Instagram round-up

    Monday, October 1, 2012

Thank goodness for Instagram so I can keep track of my own life. If you're interested in following me, look me up as RetroReporter!

My co-worker Heather rappelled down a building!
    And I took photos!
I got a hair cut and started pin curling.
I met a new guy. One of his (many) shining attributes
    is this lovely lady, Daisy.

Said guy also buys me beautiful flowers when I'm sad.
    I went home.

Helped throw a tea party with these lovely ladies!
I painted my nails for once
Sometimes I get to go to the zoo for work.
    It's awesome.
I got in more family time at the Red Deer Run for the Cure!

And there you have it, my September! How was yours?

  4. Hair experiment, part II

    Sunday, June 3, 2012

As I mentioned in my last post, I tried some different hair setting experiments to see if I actually wanted to get a hair cut or if it was just a hair slump. I documented the results on Instragram, but here's a summary if you aren't following me there (It's RetroReporter, by the way)

But no matter how hard I try, I can never get waves first thing in the morning when I brush. Both of these photos were taken at the end of the day after brushing ands transformed into beautiful waves.

The more I thought about it, the more I was leaning away from long hair. It took really long to dry and I hated washing it. It was cut into a middy so it didn't look the best on the days I didn't want to curl it. And it was SO THICK and badly needed shaping and trimming.

So on Friday I hastily made a hair appointment and this:

    Became this:

I love it! I've had short(er) hair most of my life and while I enjoyed my forey into the world of long hair, it was time for a change - at least for the summer. I've already had some fun testing out styles.

  5. Hair experiments: Loose curls

    Sunday, May 27, 2012

Before I contemplate any more on short hair, I want to play around more with my hair at its current length.

I feel like I'm not capitalizing on how long my hair is. It rests on my shoulders when it's straight, but my rollers are too small and shrinking even further due to use and so my hair curls too tightly. So before I go chop, chop I am experimenting with looser curls. Here was today's attempt:

The first photo is what it looked like when I left for work Friday, the second is when I brushed it after coming home.
(On a side note, that is red lipstick I'm wearing in #2, but I do like the pink...)

But this is merely the beginning of the hair experimenting. I want to some other sponge roller combinations (these were the biggest ones on the top two layers and the next biggest on the bottom) and pillow rollers. I also bought  1/2 inch "super rollers" to test out and MIGHT even give pin curls a try.

    Stay tuned!

  6. Style Icons: Twin Peaks

    Saturday, April 7, 2012

Yes, we're on the Twin Peaks bandwagon here at RR headquarters. We have about 7 episodes until we're done the series (no!) and I just love the style going on. In fact, at the antique show in Olds when Bee and I met up with Cee & Krista, some vendor told us we looked like we were from Twin Peaks. I'll take that as a compliment.

All of the photos in this post are from In Twin Peaks - absolutely THE BEST screen cap website I have ever been on. I've tried not to include any photos that may have spoilers, in case you too are experiencing Twin Peaks for the first time.

I must say, Audrey Horn is my favourite character. And Cooper! And they're both so stylish.

My favourite A&C scene. Love the flannel and her whole outfit.
    I want her wardrobe.

Garters on men are not AS sexy as on women, but still. Humminah humminah

    Great coat!
    Love her waves, very subtle.

The outfit that goes with the above hair photo. Peplum!

    Cute shoes!

    Civil War re-enactment
    I WANT HER HAIR.

I love the R&R diner uniforms too

    Love Nadine's shorts

I bought a very similar-styled rust coloured dress this weekend. Stay tuned for photos...

    Great hat!

Donna also has great hair. Love the blue sweater too.

  7. Show 'n' Tell: 1934 Christmas Catalogue

    Friday, February 10, 2012

I'm sure you can't tell a difference, but this is my first post from my new-to-me MacBook Pro! I used to have a MacBook before I started blogging, but she died in a tragic drinking and computing incident (lesson learned). I had been using G's Dell laptop, but to be honest it sucked and I much prefer the Mac interface. Thanks to a tax reassessment, I had the money to buy a new one. This is a refurbished 15 in MacBook pro, and it was about $850 cheaper than if I had bought it new. Sweet, eh?

Sorry to be quiet on the blogging front, we had a major breaking news story happen in our area that took my attention. Two RCMP officers (our top cops) were shot on a farm in my coverage area, so I had to run out and cover it - in heels and a skirt, naturally. You can find more information on CamroseCanadian.com if you're so inclined. Luckily yesterday was my day off, so I had a chance to relax (and I also did something very exciting that I can hopefully share with you soon!) and catch up on my sleep.

BUT! I did not just log in to brag about my awesome yet tiring week. I actually have something vintage-related to show you too. My mom forwarded me an email from a colleague of hers who heard that I was into vintage. Imagine my delight when I saw that it was a bunch of scans from a 1934 Christmas catalog. I don't know the source - if she had scanned them or found them on the Internet - but I still wanted to share them.

    I love the hair!

I love the sporty ensembles at the top!

Aren't those fabulous? And such great quality too.

I have lots of posts I want to write, so here's hoping I have time soon! While I work this weekend I have a clean slate on Sunday (so far) and all I want to do is bake red velvet cupcakes for Valentine's Day and write a bunch of blog posts!

    XO Laurie

  8. Happy weekend all! I hope you are having a great lazy day doing whatever you want to be doing. I'll be spending the day knitting and watching the BBC TV series Land Girls (1 and 2), which I took out from the library. I've had a fairly busy weekend off, so I'm looking forward to laying on the couch doing nothing for a while!

Friday G and I went to Edmonton to celebrate our three-year anniversary. We went to the Telus World of Science Titanic exhibit, something we've been meaning to do for a while now but never got around to. You weren't allowed to take photos, but some are featured on the website. It was a great exhibit (we didn't do the accompanying Imax movie because it wasn't showing for another 90 minutes) but it was rather short. It's amazing how well these artifacts are preserved!

You also get a little card at the beginning that represented a passenger on the Titanic and then you look on the wall to see if you survived. G knew he was a goner right away because he was part of the band. I was a second-class passenger who was coming home to Canada after buying my wedding dress in England (I wish!) and it turns out I survived. No info on the dress, though.

After that, we went to dinner at the Keg because we had gift certificates burning a hole in our pocket. Neither of us had eaten there before but OH MY GOD was it good. Why did I wait 21 years to have fillet mignon?

Saturday we went to #yegmediacamp, which was a short day conference that brought web developers and journalists together. It was great and I learned a lot, but if you follow me on Twitter you probably heard me blather on about it enough already.

After that G went to visit a friend, so I met up with Miss Bee and we went to Sally Beauty. Again, WHY did I wait 21 years to go there? Granted I never cared about hair stuff much before I got into vintage, but my goodness it is amazing. I was not surprised when mt bill came to $95.

I went there with a dual purpose - to find a bun form so I can use it as a rat and to find some things for the Fedora Lounge Beauty Box, which is a box that travelles from lounger to lounger around the world. You take stuff out, put stuff in. I've never participated so I'm excited!

I'm not going to show what I bought for the box because there's no fun in that, but I did buy a few duplicates for myself. I still have a few of my favourite products I want to buy and put in as well.

My goodies for the beauty box

A hair comb, pony tails holder and a straight hair form

end papers, double prong clips, lottabody & bottle, butterfly clips to do waves

An incredibly soft bristle brush and a teasing brush

After shopping and dinner, we went to a Sugar Foot Stomp! I had lots of fun and I think most people assumed I knew how to swing dance because I was all dressed up. I was wearing my new petticoat, which was tons of fun to dance in! The only thing is that I didn't have appropriate footwear because I didn't know that I was going dancing when I came up to Edmonton, so I was just in my stockings.  I didn't get stepped on, but it was harder to do some of the moves because I didn't have any grip on the floor! (I didn't take any photos because I didn't have my camera on me.)

Then we went to Bee's house to watch Swing Kids (which I had never seen but was really good!) and paint our nails. She also spoiled me with gifts, that girl! She's too sweet :D

ALSO - Bee is having a giveaway once she reaches 100 followers. Have you followed her wonderful blog yet?

She found this 1943 Complete Book of Sewing and Complete Book of Crochet at Goodwill for $4. So I have to learn to crochet and sew now!

She also passed on this white trench coat, which will be a great spring jacket for me.

She also gave me her open bottom girdle. See what I said about her being too sweet? (I know this photo is way overblown, but it helps to see the detail).

Now I really need some rest. Ta-ta for now dolls!

    XO Laurie
